Itinerary – 4 days tour from Marrakech to Fes
Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley
Your 4-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour begins early in the morning with departure from Marrakech. You travel through the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m), the highest road pass in Morocco. Along the way, enjoy panoramic views of mountain landscapes, deep valleys, and traditional Berber villages clinging to the hillsides. Several stops are made for photos and cultural explanations.
The first major stop is the legendary Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best-preserved fortified villages in Morocco. This ancient ksar, built of adobe and clay, played a key role in trans-Saharan trade and has been featured in many international films. After exploring the kasbah, continue to Ouarzazate, taking beautiful photographs in the film studios and in the Taourirt kasbah.
In the afternoon, the route passes through Skoura Oasis and the Valley of the Roses, a region famous for its palm groves, kasbahs, and rose water production. By evening, arrive in the Dades Valley, known for its red rock formations and winding roads. Dinner and overnight stay in a traditional hotel or riad.
Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorges – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert
After breakfast, continue toward Tinghir and the impressive Todra Gorges, where massive limestone cliffs rise up to 300 meters high. You will have time to walk through the gorge, admire the natural scenery, and observe local life in the nearby oasis.
The journey then continues through desert towns toward Erfoud, famous for fossils and date palms. You may visit a local fossil workshop to learn about the region’s ancient marine past. In the late afternoon, arrive in Merzouga, at the edge of the spectacular Erg Chebbi dunes.
Here begins one of the highlights of the tour: a camel trek into the Sahara Desert. Ride through the dunes at sunset as the sand turns golden and orange. Upon arrival at the desert camp, enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner, followed by Berber music around the campfire. Overnight in a Sahara desert camp, under a star-filled sky.
Day 3: Merzouga – Desert Exploration – Nomads – Khamlia – Erg Chebbi
Wake up early to witness a magical sunrise over the Sahara dunes. After breakfast, spend the day exploring the Merzouga desert region by 4×4 vehicle.
You will visit nomadic families, learn about their traditional way of life, and share mint tea with them. Continue to Khamlia village, home to the Gnawa people, where you will experience traditional spiritual music with African roots. The excursion also includes visits to desert oases, old mines, and panoramic viewpoints over the Erg Chebbi dunes.
In the afternoon, return to Merzouga village. Dinner and overnight stay in a comfortable hotel or riad near the dunes, allowing time to relax and enjoy the peaceful desert atmosphere.
Day 4: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Midelt – Ifrane – Fes
After breakfast, depart Merzouga and head north toward Fes, passing through the scenic Ziz Valley, one of Morocco’s largest oasis regions, lined with thousands of palm trees and traditional villages. Several stops are made for photos and short walks.
Continue through Midelt, located between the Middle Atlas and High Atlas Mountains, before entering the Middle Atlas region. Near Azrou, you may stop in the cedar forests to observe the famous Barbary macaques in their natural habitat.
The journey continues to Ifrane, with its alpine-style architecture, clean streets, and mountain climate. After a short visit, drive onward to Fes, arriving in the late afternoon or early evening, where the tour ends with drop-off at your accommodation.
