Itinerary – 5 Days Marrakech to Desert Tour

Day 1: Marrakech – Tizi n’Tichka – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate

You leave Marrakech early in the morning, heading toward the High Atlas Mountains via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest road in Morocco. Along the way, you can admire breathtaking mountain landscapes, snow-capped peaks in winter, and traditional Berber villages clinging to hillsides. Stop to take photos of the panoramic views and learn from your guide about the Berber culture, traditions, and life in these remote mountain areas.

Your journey continues to Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, you walk through narrow alleys, explore centuries-old mud-brick houses, and discover how traders once used these fortified villages as safe havens. You can admire the stunning architecture, hidden courtyards, and dramatic views of the kasbahs perched on the hillside. Many films and series have been shot here, so you can imagine yourself stepping into a movie set as you explore the site.

Next, you arrive in Ouarzazate, located at the edge of the High Atlas Mountains where the mountains gradually meet the desert plains. Before exploring the city, visit Atlas Studios, one of the largest film studios in the world. You can walk among film sets, view props from famous international movies, and learn about Morocco’s contribution to cinema.

Finally, visit the historic Taourirt Kasbah, a former palace of local rulers surrounded by palm groves. You can explore its halls, admire traditional mud-brick architecture, and discover the stories of the families who lived here centuries ago. Overnight in Ouarzazate.

Day 2: Ouarzazate – Skoura Oasis – Kelaat M’Gouna – Valley of Dades

You begin your day traveling east through the lush Skoura Oasis, a serene area filled with palm groves, kasbahs, and small Berber villages. Here, you can stop to explore Kasbah Amridil, a perfectly preserved kasbah that shows the traditional life of Berber families. Walk around the courtyards and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere surrounded by nature.

Next, you’ll continue to Kelaat M’Gouna, known as the Valley of Roses. Depending on the season, you can witness the rose harvest, a centuries-old tradition, or visit small shops selling rose-based products such as perfumes, oils, and soaps. Your guide will explain the importance of roses in local culture and daily life.

The day ends in the Dades Valley, famous for its dramatic red cliffs, winding roads, and rock formations called “monkey toes” or “finger rocks.” You can take a short walk along the valley to admire the views, photograph the landscapes, and enjoy the calm of this extraordinary natural setting. Overnight in a traditional hotel in Dades.

Day 3: Dades – Todra Gorges – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert

After breakfast, you travel to Tinghir and explore the spectacular Todra Gorges, where sheer cliffs rise up to 300 meters. You can walk along the gorge floor, take stunning photos, and feel the scale of this natural wonder. Your guide will share stories about the Berber communities living here for generations.

Next, drive through small villages toward Erfoud, known for its fossil deposits and palm groves. You can visit local workshops to see how artisans extract and polish fossils and shop for unique souvenirs. Erfoud is also a gateway to the Sahara, and your guide will explain the desert ecosystem and nomadic life.

Finally, you reach Merzouga, the edge of the famous Erg Chebbi dunes. You will ride camels across the golden sand as the sun sets, creating a magical scene. Arrive at your desert camp, where you can enjoy a traditional Berber dinner under the stars, listen to local music, and sleep in comfortable tents immersed in the desert atmosphere.

Day 4: Merzouga – Explore Desert Life and Berber Culture

Wake up early to see the stunning sunrise over the dunes, a moment of pure tranquility and beauty. After breakfast, you can explore the desert with your guide, learning about Berber nomadic life, desert plants, and how families survive in this harsh environment.

You can walk or ride camels to visit small nomad villages, meet local families, and see traditional houses made from palm and mud. Enjoy tea in a Berber home and hear stories of desert life and traditions. You can also try sandboarding on the dunes or simply relax and enjoy the vast desert landscapes. Overnight in Merzouga or nearby desert camp.
