Itinerary- 4 days tour from Marrakech to Merzouga desert
Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley
Your 4-day desert tour from Marrakech begins early in the morning with departure toward the High Atlas Mountains. Crossing the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m), you will enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of mountains, valleys, and traditional Berber villages built along the slopes. Several scenic stops are made to take photos and learn about daily life in the Atlas region.
The first major cultural highlight is the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Morocco’s most iconic fortified villages. Built entirely of earth and straw, this ancient ksar was an important stop for caravan traders and is now famous as a filming location for international movies. After a guided walk through the kasbah, continue to Ouarzazate, known as the “Gateway to the Desert.”
In the afternoon, the road leads through Skoura oasis and the Valley of the Roses, a region known for its kasbahs, palm groves, and rose cultivation. By evening, arrive in the Dades Valley, famous for its red rock formations and dramatic landscapes. Dinner and overnight stay in a traditional hotel or riad overlooking the valley.
Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorges – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert
After breakfast, the journey continues toward Tinghir and the impressive Todra Gorges, a spectacular canyon with towering limestone cliffs reaching up to 300 meters. You will have time to walk through the gorge, enjoy the fresh air, and admire the contrast between rock walls and green oasis fields.
Continue south toward Erfoud, a town known for fossils and date production. Here, you may visit a local fossil workshop to learn about the region’s ancient marine history. In the afternoon, arrive in Merzouga, at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, the most famous sand dunes in Morocco.
In the late afternoon, you will start your camel trek into the Sahara Desert, riding across golden dunes as the sun sets. Upon arrival at the desert camp, enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner, followed by Berber music around the campfire. Overnight in a Sahara desert camp, under a sky filled with stars.
Day 3: Merzouga – Desert Exploration – Nomads – Khamlia – Oasis
Wake up early to witness an unforgettable sunrise over the dunes, one of the most magical moments of the Sahara. After breakfast, this day is dedicated to exploring the Merzouga desert region by 4×4 vehicle.
You will visit nomadic families living in the desert, learn about their lifestyle, traditions, and hospitality, and share a cup of mint tea. Continue to Khamlia village, home of the Gnawa people, where you will enjoy traditional music with African rhythms. The tour also includes a visit to desert oases, old mines, and scenic viewpoints over the dunes.
In the afternoon, return to Merzouga village. Dinner and overnight stay in a comfortable hotel or riad near the dunes, allowing you to relax and enjoy the peaceful desert atmosphere.
Day 4: Merzouga – Rissani – Draa Valley – High Atlas – Marrakech
After breakfast, depart Merzouga and travel through Rissani, the former capital of the Tafilalt region and an important trading center. If timing allows, you may visit the local market, where locals trade livestock, spices, and traditional goods.
The return journey follows the Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest river valley, lined with thousands of palm trees, ancient kasbahs, and traditional villages.
