Itinerary – 2 days Marrakech to Zagora desert tour
Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas – Ait Ben Haddou – Draa Valley – Zagora
The tour begins early in the morning with departure from Marrakech, heading south toward the High Atlas Mountains. You will cross the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 m), the highest mountain road in Morocco, offering panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, and traditional Berber villages built along the mountainsides. Several stops are made along the way for photos and to observe daily life in the Atlas region.
The first major cultural stop is the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Morocco’s most iconic landmarks. This fortified village, built with traditional adobe architecture, has served as a backdrop for many international films and series. Walking through its narrow alleys gives you insight into ancient desert architecture and the history of caravan trade routes.
After lunch near Ait Ben Haddou, the journey continues toward Ouarzazate, known as the “Gateway to the Desert,” before heading south through the Draa Valley, the longest river valley in Morocco. This region is famous for its vast palm groves, kasbahs, and oasis villages stretching for hundreds of kilometers. By late afternoon, arrive in Zagora, where your camel trek begins. Ride camels into the desert at sunset, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and golden colors of the landscape. Dinner and overnight stay in a desert camp, with traditional Moroccan food and Berber music under the stars.
Day 2: Zagora – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate – High Atlas – Marrakech
Wake up early to enjoy a calm sunrise over the desert, a magical moment where the light slowly transforms the landscape. After breakfast at the camp, return by camel or vehicle to Zagora and begin the journey back to Marrakech.
Travel again through the scenic Draa Valley, with stops to take photos of palm groves, ksour (fortified villages), and local life along the oasis. Continue toward Ouarzazate, with optional stops near film studios or kasbah viewpoints, before crossing the High Atlas Mountains once more via Tizi n’Tichka. In the late afternoon or early evening, arrive back in Marrakech, where the tour ends with drop-off at your accommodation.
